Thursday February 2023 Ripple Glass Facility Tour

Ripple Glass was born out of a Kansas City brewery’s passion to run a zero-landfill business. Keeping beer bottles out of landfills was just the beginning, as Ripple helps more and more glass achieve a second life. Members of AHMP toured the facility and leared the ins and outs of how Ripple Glass was formed and continues to grow in the midwest and how it plans to expand in Atlanta!

Thursday April 21, 2022 Hybrid Meeting
Mr. Eric Beightel, Principal for Infrastructure Policy and Environmental Strategy at HDR, Inc. presented on the recently enacted $2 trillion bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, with a particular focus on aspects of the law dealing with environmental management and remediation, water infrastructure, equity and environmental justice, renewable energy, and climate change mitigation and resiliency.

Thursday October 1, 2020 Virtual Meeting
The Resilient Activist’s founder and Extension Master Naturalist, Sami Aaron, shared the inspiring and unique story of the Pollinator Prairie, situated in an older neighborhood in Olathe, Kansas, and how it was transformed from a toxic waste Superfund Site to an Ecological Habitat.
The presentation covered:
• The history of the property and the remediation process
• How this devastated parcel of land was revitalized to support pollinators while providing a delightful neighborhood pocket park for the public
• The role of the K-State Johnson County Extension Master Naturalists in maintaining the gardens and restoring habitat at the site
• How you can install a simple, no-dig native garden to benefit butterflies, bees, dragonflies, and more

September 2019 – Tour of Johnson County Sustainability Initiatives
We had an interesting discussion of sustainability initiatives with members of the JCCC Center for Sustainability including Jay Antle, Executive Director; Kristy Howell, Sustainability Education and Engagement Coordinator; and Michael Rea, Sustainability Project Manager. We ate farm lunch sustainably grown at the campus farm and prepared by the college and toured campus sustainability initiatives. One of the most interesting discussions concerned the use of vinyl “bird dots” to prevent birds from flying windows. To find out more about the JCCC Center for Sustainability, visit their website.

March 28, 2019 Tour of the Kansas City Emergency Operations Center

We had a fascinating tour of the Kansas City, Missouri’s Emergency Operations Center during our March Meeting. We learned about Emergency Management’s work targeted to the citizens of Kansas City, Missouri their role in regional planning, coordinating, and preparing.  Thanks to Heartland CHMM Board Member, Andy Savastino for organizing the tour and to Jennifer Fales, Emergency Management Coordinator, for leading a lively and engaging tour!

 

November 2018
Our November General meeting was a success! We had a number of new attendees. We want to extend a special thanks to Chapter President, John Simpson, for stepping in at the last minute when our scheduled presenter could not attend. John shared an interesting PCB remediation project at a former diecasting facility located in Buckner, Kansas.

September 2018
Our tour of the Kansas City, Missouri Regional HHW Facility was very interesting and informative. A special thanks to Heartland Board Member, Andy Savastino, for organizing, and to Facility Manager, Robert Fort, for leading the tour and answering the myriad of questions from our group.
